If you want to spend some winter days in an intriguing atmosphere, why not plunge into the British Society of the XIX century? With gripping and intense plots, Pride and Prejudice and Death Comes to Pemberly could give you a clear image of that environment.
The first aspect that strikes you is the ability of P.D. James, author of Death Comes to Pemberly to write in exact the same, remarkable style as Jane Austen. Also common to both novels are the characters, which maintain not only their names and roles but also their original perosnality, with a realistic description of power of feelings and thaughts. But it is also in the setting and in the representation of the landscapes given by the authors that the two books resemble each other the most.
The main difference between Death Comes to Pemberly and Pride and Prejudice is given by the variation of literary genre. In fact the first one is an origianl exemple of a detective novel whereas the second is the classic representation of the romance novel. Moreover, whilst in the Jane Austen book most of the story is set in Longbourn, the P.D. James one takes place in Pemberly.
The admirable writing ability of the writer of Death Comes to Pemberly makes this novel rather agreable although Pride and Prejudice reamains an inimitable model of writing and poetry
Thanks for putting up your review of these two books, Irene. You're our first contributor! Pride and Prejudice is one of my all-time favourite books, but I haven't read Death comes to Pemberley. From what you have written, it seems as if it is definitely worth reading, so I'll put it on my list of "must-read" books!
ReplyDeleteHas anyone else read either of these two books?
I've also read Jane's Austen Pride and Prejudice and I really liked it. I also enjoyed very much the TV series starring Colin Firth which I think are quite alike the novel. However, I haven't read Death comes to Pemberly. Guess I'll have to!

Irene, you were the partner when we talked about this writing task and since then I've been interested in the book "Death comes to Pemberly". I saw "Pride and Prejudice" on DVD and I like it. Although it'll be interesting to read its book, I want to read "Death comes to Pemberly" when I finish reading a book which I'm reading at the moment.
ReplyDeleteSadly I haven't read any of these books, but I know word by word the movie made in 2005 of Pride and Prejudice! It's the one with Keira Knightley.. does this give me some points? :)
ReplyDeleteYes, that definitely gets you points! Have you ever seen the BBC version that Marta mentioned? Colin Firth really is the ultimate Mr Darcy! I've got the DVD of the whole series if you want to borrow it!
